Shawn Murenbeeld from Touchwood Design

Discover the interview of Shawn Murenbeeld from Touchwood Design:

How did you become designer?

It goes back a ways. I was always drawing as a kid—mostly sci-fi, superheroes, and war stuff. School marks weren’t great, and to be honest, I wasn’t the best artist—just a creative kid. Always building, making, filming on Super 8, and painting. A close friend suggested I go to art school and become a designer. I didn’t really know what that meant at the time, but I got accepted into an intense program, and the rest is history.

How would you define your vision of design, your style?

People say my style is clean, masculine, cold, and European. Not exactly a glowing endorsement, but what can I say—I started as a corporate designer. That said, I try not to impose my personal taste on client work. Every client, every brief is different, and it should reflect their mission, values, and goals—not mine.

For the future, what are your professional projects?

I’d like to secure more large clients so we can be an agency of record rather than working project by project. It takes a bit of the financial pressure off and lets us focus more energy on the creative process, which is really where the fun is.

What do you like the most in your job?.

Honestly? Every day is different. No two clients are the same. We work across tourism, food, not-for-profit, corporate—you name it. I love the variety and the challenges because, at the end of the day, we’re all problem solvers. Clients come with a problem, and we get to figure out how to solve it for them.
