Discover the interview of Leyre San Miguel & Matthew Townsend from Leyma Design:
How did you become designer?
Both of us arrived at design from slightly different angles (Matthew through product and furniture design, and Leyre through branding and visual communication) but what connected us early on was a shared curiosity for how things are made and how design can shape everyday experiences. We’ve always been drawn to projects that blur disciplines and allow ideas to live across identities, objects and spaces.
How would you define your vision of design, your style?
We like to think of our style as quietly bold. Refined, but with character. We care about materials, about clarity, and about creating work that feels both human and intentional. Our projects often balance simplicity with vibrant colors or bold layouts that make things feel alive. Whether it’s a piece of furniture or a brand, we aim for design that’s thoughtful, grounded, and timeless rather than trend-led.
For the future, what are your professional projects?
We continue to develop Leyma Design, working with several brands from around the world. Our goal is to keep finding new, meaningful clients and to add something interesting to the design world with every collaboration. We’ve also launched Leyma Shop (leyma.design/shop), a creative offshoot where we experiment with small-batch pieces made using sustainable materials, 3D printing, and laser cutting.
What do you like the most in your job?.
The variety. One day we’re discussing typography and packaging details; the next, we’re testing materials or prototyping an object. We love that mix of thinking and making, and the fact that every project is a new chance to learn something and collaborate with people who are as passionate about their craft as we are.
