Discover the interview of Allan Gomes in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.
How did you become designer ?
I am a Brazilian graphic designer now based in Toronto, Canada. My passion for design came from my first professional experience. I started working on my father’s print-shop when I was just 15 years old. Since then, I’ve never stopped creating graphic works. In 2010, I enrolled the Design program at the Faculty of Architecture and Design of the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG). My academic background in addition to my professional experience over the past decade has brought me closer to the field of packaging design, which I intend to continue on another level from now on.
How would you define your vision of design, your style ?
I define myself as a keen and eclectic graphic designer. I approach all the projects from a different point of view, looking for innovation, but always thinking in the briefing objectives and the project functionality. I focus my energy on the concept or idea which must be behind the nature of the project, that’s why I always start with the “why” before getting to the “what”.
For the future, what are your professional projects
For the next years I am planning to finish my graduate studies at York University, Canada. The primary objectives I hope to achieve with my Master’s degree are the expansion of my creative capacity in addition to the development of my design skills and research abilities. My past professional and academic experiences have given me the skills needed for entering at the graduate school with a clear definition of what will be the main theme of my research.
What do you like the most in your job ?
During the past 5 years, I had been working as a senior graphic designer at Obah Design, a creative studio specialized in packaging design and point of sale advertisement. As well as the opportunity to build an outstanding portfolio, I have gained experience in dealing with real projects besides of being challenged everyday to find visual solutions to clients’ problems. My position in this company only reinforced my passion in the areas of branding and packaging design. Although from now on, I will continue as a freelance designer in pursuit of finishing my Master’s degree.
