Discover the interview of Alice Des (photo by Domestika):
How did you become designer?
Actually, I have a communication and political studies background. I loved drawing and started doing illustration on the side of my studies, then I first worked for a year in communication agencies before becoming an illustrator agent in Paris. I worked there for 4 years, and loved being in contact with commercial illustrators from around the world. I got to see their creative process, and it inspired me to become a freelance illustrator full time myself!
How would you define your vision of design, your style?
My work is inspired by vintage designs and a little bit nostalgia. I love simple and graphic design from the beginning of the XXth century : stripes and graphic patterns, high contrast, simple shapes, textures and imperfections.
For the future, what are your professional projects?
My first solo show “Marée Haute, Marée Basse” (High tide, Low tide) take place in September at the parisian Slow Galerie. I exhibit personal work around my childhood summer memories in the Northern coast of France, with gouache paintings and ceramics sculptures. I’m eager to continue pursuing the experimentations on different mediums, as well as new collaborations with brands in France and in other countries!
What do you like the most in your job?
I love that the projects are so varied and different from one week to the next. I’ve done beer labels, textile collaborations, illustrated editorial articles as well as food packaging, animated clips for brands, painted a mural, sculpted ceramics. I love the challenges and learning new skills and techniques. I love that the projects are so varied and different from one week to the next.
