Litoral Lab — Challenging the Visual Conventions of Medical Cannabis
Can design change the way we perceive an entire industry?
The way a brand presents itself can reinforce existing prejudices or become a tool for challenging them. In industries shaped by stigma, visual identity plays a particularly important role. It can influence how an organization is perceived, how its products are understood, and how people engage with a category that is still surrounded by misconceptions.
Litoral Lab is a medical cannabis association based in Santa Fe, Argentina. For this project, Vantablack Studio developed a comprehensive branding, visual identity, and packaging system with a clear objective: to move beyond the predictable visual language that has long dominated the cannabis industry and establish a distinctive identity rooted in the organization’s purpose.
Rather than relying on familiar industry aesthetics, we explored a visual direction that combines traditional graphic references with a contemporary approach to branding. Expressive typography, carefully constructed compositions, a distinctive color palette, and detailed packaging finishes come together to create a recognizable visual system that works consistently across different products and communication platforms.
Packaging became a central part of this exploration. Beyond its functional role, we approached each piece as a physical expression of the brand’s identity, paying particular attention to materials, textures, printing techniques, and the relationship between graphic design and three-dimensional form. The result is a cohesive family of products that share a common visual language while maintaining their individual character.
Our intention was not simply to make medical cannabis look different, but to question how the category has traditionally been represented.
Every decision in branding, design, and communication contributes to shaping public perception. A carefully developed identity can help organizations communicate their purpose more clearly, distinguish their products, and establish a more meaningful relationship with their audiences.
Through Litoral Lab, we explored how design can challenge established industry conventions without sacrificing clarity, functionality, or authenticity. The project reflects our belief that branding extends far beyond aesthetics: it is a means of building identity, creating distinction, and contributing to broader conversations about how industries are represented and understood.
