Discover the interview of Van Heertum Design – Martin de Weijer :
How did you become designer?
As a young boy I already knew what I wanted to be. After graduating from the creative academy “Sint Lucas” in Boxtel, about 28 years ago, I immediately started working in the graphic sector. I worked myself up from a junior designer to a co-owner and creative director at VHD at the moment, working for the greatest international brands.
How would you define your vision of design, your style?
I don’t think I have one specific style, it depends on the briefing I get. But if I could choose it myself I would go for maximalism. That’s also why I love using different techniques, materials, innovations and combinations of them into the design to get the max out of every story. We have a huge innovation network, consisting of major players in the production sector, so we know as designers what can and cannot be produced. It all starts with keeping new innovations and knowing what’s out there, otherwise it will not end up in a design proposal.
For the future, what are your professional projects?
Our agency focuses mainly on spirits and beverages, so we have some great projects going on within that sectors. Brandy from Norway, Whiskey from Scotland, Gin from the Netherlands, Rum from Indonesia, Vodka from Holland and I could go on. So we feel very blessed to be able to work for these great brands across the world.
What do you like the most in your job?
Sketching and creating a story using labels, bottles, embellishments, different printing techniques, new innovations… you name it 😉
