Discover the interview of Terezija Katona from PopArt Studio, located in Novi Sad, Serbia

How did you become designer ?

I’ve always been interested in all kinds of visual arts, such as hand-drawing on paper, architecture, the way things around me look like. As time passed by, I started narrowing down my interests and realized that besides the artistic visual expression, what tops everything else is functionality and the need for the design to get the message through. After that I enrolled in Graphic Engineering and Design studies at the Faculty of Technical Sciences at the University of Novi Sad, and after having completed a few internships in Novi Sad and Germany and my graduation, I found a job at PopArt Studio, where I now manage our Design Team comprised of 9 designers and work on different graphic and web design projects.

How would you define your vision of design, your style ?

Well, my style can be defined as practical, spontaneous, but functional. I always prefer a simple, unique style with elements of surprise, contrast, and assymetry.
In the sense of applied arts, Graphic Design should above all solve problems which is why it is very important that designers adjust their expression to the target group they are trying to address and connect with them on a completely new level. This way, you get a unique style which works for the client and leaves the designer’s personal mark on it.

For the future, what are your professional projects ?

I definitely expect that future will be challenging, but also to work hard on improving my graphic and professional skills.
Since our studio is reaching out to the global market, the biggest challenge I expect would be understanding other cultures, people, and the best ways of transmitting visual messages.
As a designer, I expect and hope to discover new styles and work on graphic elements I haven’t tried before. Also, I hope to dedicate more time to personal projects, where I have a complete freedom of expression.

What do you like the most in your job ?

The possibility of transmitting the message without saying a word. The dynamics and working on different projects. Giving brands new identities, helping them come alive and become memorable.
