Discover the interview of Jelena Drobac.

How did you become designer ?

By chance :). I was studying journalism in London and realized that it wasn’t right for me. Then I came back home to Belgrade and through a friend of a friend met someone who was studying graphic design. It was then that I found out what I should do in my future and from
that moment on I cough up everything really quickly: degrees, first projects, exhibitions. Everything just clicked and I knew that was my path.

How would you define your vision of design, your style ?

My slogan for years has been “KISS – keep it smART and simple”. I don’t follow trends and like a combination of a strong symbol and good typography. I love doing logos and all other projects resemble my logo design logic – easy to remember with a strong focal point and
message. More recently, I started enjoying playing with materials so I do a lot of textile print, woodwork, printing on plastics, glass, ceramics… Love the idea of pushing graphic design on to more objects and more users.

For the future, what are your professional projects ?

For years, I did designs for financial and government institutions and FMCG. Few years back, I started working for cultural events and small creative businesses which was a really happy change for me. Currently, I’m working on a really new idea of pan-European souvenirs and a
cookbook which is something I always wanted to do. So excited about both projects!
I never know what is coming next and I have enough project inquiries that I can pick and choose which one I am going to do. Hope to do a restaurant design again in near future. That is always fun and playful!

What do you like the most in your job ?

Learning every day and pushing your own boundaries! Print and web have changed so much in the last decade since I graduated design. As a designer, I have to be up to date, in order to be capable to offer my clients the best solution. Also a special perk is that in a global village that a world today is – design is a medium and a global language. You can work from your home office or a beach bar for clients worldwide.
